thE ORGIN OF THE CAVE SYSTEM.

Tucked into the rolling Dr. Seuss-like mountains in the southern most region of Mexico, lies one of the most magnificent karst foundations. Within it is the western hemisphere’s deepest underground cave system, full of diverse cave adapted biology and history rooted from the locals that nest above ground.

The same system inspired explorer’s Bill Steele and Tommy Shifflet to launch a ten year project mapping, researching, documenting and teaching the locals about what lies below ground known to us today as Proyecto Espeleologico Sistema Huautla (PESH). Thus, every April, for the extended ten year contract, the best cavers from around the world pack duffle bags full of gear and head straight to Plan Carlotta, base camp for PESH. Its objective is to not only discover unexplored passage underground but to study the system in collaboration with Mexico Scientists.
