SCCPSS Celebrates Literacy with Special Events Over the Next Two Weeks!
Updated

SCCPSS Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts has declared literacy the North Star for Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools. She believes that every child should be given the opportunity to pursue their greatest potential and a choice-filled life and literacy is fundamental to that opportunity.  SCCPSS will celebrate literacy on Monday, September 22nd as part of a statewide focus called Georgia Reads Day and then again, our district Literacy Week September 30th through October 4th, 2025 with a number of events. Those include:

Monday, September 22nd – Georgia Reads Day - In this annual event sponsored by the GA Council on Literacy, students across the state participate in a virtual reading rally with UGA's own Malcolm Mitchell.  Elementary students will watch the livestream and older students will participate in a "Stop Drop and Read" opportunity – a county-wide initiative asking community members to stop what they're doing and read for a short period of time, demonstrating support for literacy week and the importance of reading.

Tuesday, September 30th – Family Literacy Night - Each school will host a family literacy night to immerse families in hands-on literacy activities and practical at home tips.  For more information, please see messages from individual schools.

Friday, October 3rd – LitTalks - Hear compelling stories from SCCPSS staff and students about their passion for literacy and practical tips you can use in your home or work.  This event takes place at Beach High School on Fri 10/3 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  RSVP using this link.

Saturday, October 4th – Parent University - Join Parent University at the Davis-Edwards-Harris Complex to build your skills as a literacy builder at home!  Spend the day with other SCCPSS families and staff and engage in workshops to learn more about what literacy is and how you can support your children at home.  All of us in the community play a role in student success, and Parent U workshops are a great way to access your strengths to support children. The sessions will take place from 9:30am to 1:30 pm.  There will be many Service & Resource Organizations  (many literacy based) in attendance.  Free lunch and childcare are included. There is no need to register in advance.

Please check your school’s website and social media to find information on events happening there.  Let’s make this a great celebration of literacy!
